Monitoring my GAME Plan Progress
In monitoring my progress on my GAME Plan, I do feel that I need to modify it slightly to make it feel more manageable. My current GAME Plan is set up so that I will create on new technology activity per unit. Although this is still my ultimate goal, I think for now I would just like to focus on creating one very meaningful activity per 9 weeks. I would also like to add that since I am getting ready to start a new semester with new students in January, I would really like to focus on starting my GAME Plan next semester. I have already begun to brainstorm some ideas that I can possibly use for my projects. However, I have not come to the point where I have surely decided on what projects to implement. I will be implementing these into CP Geometry classes, so I think it will be easy to do, but I really want to make sure I plan meaningful activities that my students will get excited about and have the opportunity to show off what they have learned in a creative way. There are still so many things that I need to do to get this GAME Plan going, but I feel that now that I have changed it to just two activities, I can really focus on making two GREAT activities. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would love to hear them. Have you done similar activites in your own classrooms that I could benefit from? Thanks for the input! I look forward to hearing from you!

Sally,
ReplyDeleteWe seem to be headed in the same direction. I too feel that it would be best to wait for the new semester. I would like to complete a project with my Algebra II students but may only complete one project for the semester. This is my first time teaching this course and I want to make sure to cover all the standards before the end of the semester.
I am still trying to think of what to do for my project also. I have been working at finding an idea to implement in our lesson plan for next week and will probably use the GAME plan for this lesson. I have not completed any real projects in my classes other than those already used in a book. I have one book that relates math to movies. I enjoy this since I enjoy watching movies. I may use this again sometime. I would suggest doing a search in our "next step" list for this week. I plan to do this and you may find some ideas there as well. Or do your own search with project-based learning and assessment. Hope this helps.

In many of our Walden classes the movie What About Bob? comes to mind. The therapist says, “Baby steps.”
ReplyDeleteMaybe a big project is too overwhelming. It is for me. Maybe start with the goal of a smaller one or two day project. My neighbor draws up blue prints for structural steel. I was just talking with him in his basement when I noticed one of his blue prints. It could be cool to search out some of these blue prints for local structures. Students could simply identify all the vertical or corresponding etc… angles. This would be relatively easy and take minimal prep time.
Then maybe the next year add in a component where they search out the drawings online themselves. Then just keep adding as time goes.
Good Luck!
Sally,
ReplyDeleteI feel the same as you. I think that it takes time to plan and implement a meaningful project. I haven't taught Geometry but I worked with a Geometry teacher that had wonderful ideas. She would take pictures of her students and they would use a photo editing software to make "symmetry" pictures of their faces. They would cut the picture in half (along the y-axis, graphically speaking) and show a picture of the right side of the reflected and then do the same for the left. The pictures were funny. She posted them on the door. They led to a discussion on whether their faces were truly symmetrical.

Thanks for all of the GREAT comments!
ReplyDeleteRhonda, I like your idea about relating math to movies in the classroom. I would probably only be allowed to show clips from the movie in my classroom, but that would be fine as long as I could relate what we were learning to the movie clip. Students would really enjoy that!
Charles, I really like the blueprint idea. Students are constantly asking when they could possibly use what they are learning in the real world, and that would show them one possibility.
Lisa, I also like the face idea. It would take some time, but students would enjoy it and really learn about symmetry along the way!
Thanks again! I appreciate all of the help!!

Sally,
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the movies. I usually only show a 10 or 15 minute clip of the movie. The book I have explains exactly what section of the movie to use. We also have an internet site that we use in the state of Indiana called Learn 360. It already has various movie clips from films and instructional videos to use. It easy to use keywords to find what you need.
Glad to share.
